La primera vez que leí este libro (allá por el 2019), aún no había leído tanto M/M como ahora. Por aquel entonces mis lecturas LGBT se centraban principalmente en el manga, y mis experiencias con las novelas habían sido escasas y poco memorables. Pero me topé con este libro y lo amé. Tanto como lo he leído esta vez, tras haberlo releído varias veces.

Este libro tiene un montón de clichés que adoro: el mejor amigo del hermano/a, una relación falsa, el despertar de la bisexualidad, romance deportivo y muchos más. Pero no solo es de qué trata sino cómo lo trata.

“You do like baseball, right?” Damon looks at me as if I’m about to slaughter a unicorn.
“I’m more of a football kind of guy.”
He checks his watch. “Three hours and this fake relationship is already over.”

La trama arranca con rapidez, sin perder el tiempo con tonterías. Maddox se encuentra con su ex-novia una noche en un pab, ex-novia que se encuentra celebrando su despedida de soltera y la cual termina invitándolo a su boda. ¿El problema? Pues básicamente, Maddox para cortar con ella mintió sobre su sexualidad, fingiendo ser gay, y ahora que tiene que asistir a su boda, deberá regresar al pequeño pueblo del que proceden los dos acompañado de un novio falso.

Aquí es donde entra Stacey, su mejor amiga, quien resulta que tiene un hermano gay. Y a Maddox no se le ocurre otra cosa que pedirle ayuda a Damon a cambio de ayudarlo con su carrera emergente como agente deportivo. Y allá que van, como novios de un día para otro, sin apenas conocerse, a un pequeño pueblo en el que todo el mundo tendrá la vista puesta en ellos.

Fuck, he’s good-looking when he smiles. So much so, I’m wondering if my family will call bullshit on our little act. Clearly, if I was with Damon for real, I’d be punching above my weight.

No os asustéis, que aquí el instalove no tiene cabida. Damon es muy crítico con Maddox, por cómo rompió con su novia y por que haya hecho uso de un tema tan delicado para la gente que sí que es del colectivo y que tiene problemas o dificultades para salir del armario. Además, Damon sabe que, por norma general, no cualquier chico heterosexual se sentiría cómo fingiendo ser gay (y no solo de palabra, sino haciendo el paripé y teniendo que convencer a los demás), por lo que no está muy seguro de que la treta vaya a funcionar.

Lo que ninguno de los dos esperaba era la forma en la que Maddox reaccionaría al hermano de su mejor amiga. La tensión entre ellos aumenta de forma paulatina durante el fin de semana de la boda, y cuando vuelven a casa deciden seguir siendo amigos. Su relación es la cosa más natural que podréis leer; son dos personas que encajan, que hacen click  y que por mucho que haya trabas o motivos por lo que no estar juntos, la tensión entre los dos crece y crece.

Este primer libro, en mi opinión, es la novela perfecta sobre el despertar de la bisexualidad. Y dejadme deciros que no hay tantos libros sobre esta sexualidad, y los que hay no siempre tocan el tema. La bisexualidad está muy en entredicho, y mucha gente que podría ser en algún grado bisexual ni se lo plantea siquiera. En el caso de Maddox, le cuesta hacerse a la idea y cuando se topa con alguien como Damon, que conoce un poco más el mundo de la diverisidad, y le plantea el asunto de la bisexualidad, tiene una lucha interna hasta que finalmente lo asume y decide que en efecto eso se corresponde con cómo se siente él.

Además de todo esto, esta historia es mucho más que un romance entre dos chicos de lo más adorables. Stacey es un punto hilarente en esta novela que aporta una ligereza y unas carcajadas de lo más locas. Es la tercera en esta relación maravillosa, y sus bromas y jugarretas son de lo más divertidas.

Y por supuesto, en este libro conocemos a algunos de los que serán futuros protagonistas. Como me he leído toda la saga ya (estoy haciendo relectura del universo de Eden Finley coescrito con Saxon James, dos autoras que A-DO-RO) os digo que la mayoría de los libros se pueden leer de forma independiente, pero es aconsejable hacerlo en orden porque si no te perderás algo de info. Aquí conocemos a Matt y a Noah, por ejemplo, que serán los próximos protas. Y aunque en ese libro se presenta casi toda la info, nunca está de más leerlo en orden. Además, no os arrepentiréis.

The first time I read this book (back in 2019), I hadn't read as much M/M as I have at this moment. Back then, my LGBT reads were mainly manga, but I didn't have a huge experience with novels. And I loved it. As much as I love this time, after having reread it more than once.

This book has many tropes I love: Sibling's BF, Fake dating, Bi-Awakening, Sport romance and many more. But also, there's how the story goes.

The plot starts quickly, without beating around the bush. Maddox meets his ex-girlfriend, who's celebrating her bachelorette party, and ends up being invited to the wedding. The issue? To break with her he lied and said he was gay, and now he must go to a small town wedding with a boyfriend he doesn't have.

Enter Stacy, his best friend, who has a gay brother, and so Maddox asks them for help in exchange of helping Damon with his sporting agency career. And so off they go to Maddox's small town as boyfriends!!

This was not instalovish at all, Damon is judgy about how Maddox behaved when breaking up with his ex, and he's also doubtful of how Maddox will react when they have to actually fake being boyfriends.

What neither expected was how Maddox would react to his bestie's brother! The tension slowly builds while they are attending the wedding, and when they go back home they keep in contact as friends. Their relationship is natural, they just click and that doesn't stop the tension from building even higher, since Damon has issues that stop him from actually giving into the temptation that Maddox is.

This first book was a perfect Bi-Awakening for me. It has the struggle you would expect from someone who never considered being nothing but straight, and that's nicely depicted through Maddox.

Also, we have much more than just romance. Stacy was a hilarious note in the story, her pranks were crazy even if they never ended happily. I loved meeting their families and the dramas they bring; Damon's is protective and caring and Maddox's is full of secrets that get suddenly unveiled.

Of course, we meet some of the future main characters. Matt and Noah, who will star in the second book, and also Ollie. I love them all, and it was amazing getting to read about them again. I can't wait to keep rereading every book in the sadenverse, and if you still haven't read them, you should!!
