Este libro tenía algo que me llamaba mucho la atención y que me atraía pese a que la propia sinopsis indica que es un instalove y que es relativamente corto (126 páginas), lo que no suele ser lo que más me guste.

Con todo ello, lo he empezado y terminado hoy (porque con lo corto que es se lee de una sentada), dado que estaba en el mood de leer algo más ligerito tras mi anterior lectura.

Tal y como nos indica la sinopsis, nos encontramos con Pierce celebrando el aniversario de su muerte en una pequeña cabaña perdida en el monte. Es el único día del año que se toma para sí mismo, y le gusta pasarlo en soledad y con un ambiente oscuro y triste. Me ha gustado esta dicotomía en él, ya que por un lado ves que le apena haber perdido su "humanidad" pero al tiempo agradece que su "padre" le salvase la vida y le gusta su vida actual.

Por otro lado, tenemos a James, un joven humano que decide hacer una acampada en solitario en el monte para despedirse de su padre, recientemente fallecido, y esparcir sus cenizas en el lugar en el que tantos recuerdos ha compartido con la persona que se lo dio todo e hizo de él el hombre que es hoy.

Lo que no esperaba encontrarse, además de una tormenta de nieve que hace le hace terminar su escapada antes de tiempo, es una manada de lobos extrañamente grandes que decide atacarle sin previo aviso.

Y así es como se conocen nuestros protagonistas, cuando Pierce capta el olor de su sangre y decide salvarlo. Al ser una novela corta, no hay mucho espacio para el desarrollo emocional de la pareja, de ahí el instalove. Pese a ello, y aunque tiendo a no disfrutar mucho del instalove, no me ha disgustado mucho porque creo que está bien integrado con las circunstancias de los personajes, la conexión que comparten y ese elemento de fated mates que los une.

Si lo lees contando conque tiene 126 páginas y que en esa cantidad no se puede desarrollar una historia demasiado profunda, lo puedes disfrutar perfectamente. A mí, personalmente, me ha gustado cómo han chocado Pierce y James, que sean totalmente diferentes, pero al mismo tiempo exactamente lo que el otro necesitaba en su vida. La trama con los shifters no está muy desarrollada, pero promete porque nos presenta nuevos personajes que podrían dar juego en el futuro. No está mal, es entretenido y da un extra de peligrosidad y tensión a la historia que da algo de profundidad también al desarrollo de la relación entre Pierce y James, dentro de lo que cabe.

Lo que más me falla a mí, realmente, es la extensión. Preferiría que fuese más largo y hubiese más tiempo no solo para desarrolla la relación sino también para tener un poco más de ellos una vez el peligro acaba y aceptan lo que sienten el uno por el otro. Se me ha quedado como un poco a medias, como que me falta algo, y ni siquiera sé si su historia va a continuar en un segundo libro o si el siguiente de la saga tendrá (como imagino) unos nuevos protagonistas.

There was something with this book that caught my attention and called to me, despite the synopsis itself indicating that it involves instalove and it being relatively short (126 pages), which are not usually my fav things.

Nevertheless, I started and finished it in one day (it being as short as it is, you can read it in one sitting).

As the synopsis notes, we find Pierce celebrating his death anniversary in a small cabin lost in the mountains. That’s the only day of the year he takes for himself, and he likes to spend it in solitude, in a dark and sad atmosphere. I liked this dichotomy in him because on one hand, you see that he is saddened by losing his "humanity" so many years ago, but at the same time, he appreciates that his "father" saved his life, and he likes his current life.

On the other hand, we have James, a young human who decides to camp alone in the mountains to say goodbye to his recently deceased father and scatter his ashes in the place where he shared so many memories with the person who gave him everything and made him the man he is today.

What he did not expect to encounter, however, in addition to a snowstorm that forces him to end his getaway early, is a pack of unusually large wolves that decide to attack him without warning.

And that's how our MCs meet, when Pierce catches the scent of his blood and decides to save him. Being a short novella as it is, there’s not much room for emotional development, hence the instalove. Despite that, and although I tend not to enjoy instalove very much, I didn't dislike it much because I think it is well integrated with the characters' circumstances, the connection they share, and the element of fated mates that binds them.

If you read this considering that it has 126 pages and that in that amount you can't develop a too deep story, you can enjoy it perfectly fine. Personally, I liked how Pierce and James clashed, being completely different but at the same time exactly what the other needed in their life.

The plot with the shifters is not very developed, but it’s promising as it introduces new characters that could play a role in the future. It's not bad, though, it's entertaining, and it adds an extra layer of danger and tension to the story, giving some depth to the development of the relationship between Pierce and James, within reasonable limits, of course.

What really falls short for me is the length. I would have preferred for it to be longer and for there to be more time not only to develop the relationship but also to read a bit more of them after the danger ends and they accept what they feel for each other. It feels a bit incomplete to me, like something is missing, and I don't even know if their story will continue in a second book or if the next in the series will have (as I imagine) new MCs.
